REGRET

What about regret? We may regret things without imposing a painful guilt trip on ourselves. All of us have made mistakes; hence, we all have regrets. But it does not follow that we should beat ourselves black and blue because of past mistakes. There is pain in regret. But not necessarily guilt.

There is also pain without regret. Sometimes it is painful to make a hard decision, but it does not follow that you regret what you had to do. Paul said he was sorry he caused the Corinthians sorrow by his previous letter and was sorry over what he also had to do in the case of the wayward church member, but he added, "I do not regret it" (2 Cor. 7:8).

It is interesting that the word translated "regret" in 2 Corinthians 7:8 is from the Greek word metamelomai-the very same word used to describe the "repentance" of Judas Iscariot after he realized his fatal error by betraying Jesus (Matt. 27:3). The Greek word means "to experience remorse." It is precisely what Paul didn't feel when he stepped into the painful situation in Corinth. But regret and remorse were what Judas felt too late. Unlike Paul, Judas must have experienced an incalculable measure of guilt. It is guilt that neither he nor anybody else could ever do anything about.

Think about those who, like Judas, will not go to heaven and will spend eternity in hell. One of the things that will make hell, hell will be the sense of guilt that will never go away. It is perhaps too awful to think about, but it has to be said nonetheless. I would be so pleased that a person came to Christ by reading this book, and sometimes a warning like this is what it takes for some. One of my predecessors at Westminster Chapel, Dr. G. Campbell Morgan, hardly known for being a hell-fireand-brimstone preacher, actually said that his own experience in preaching evangelistic sermons was that more people came to Christ through the preaching of eternal judgment than by any other approach to the gospel.
